After spending time in Štoj, Aradac, Bitola and Mostar during years 2013 and 2014, four large tapestries have been produced through different kinds of engagement with numerous local inhabitants on each of the locations. The most important topics of local everyday life were detected, analysed, discussed, debated and stitched in to the cloth. Documentary embroidery, as its name suggests, is a documentary technique which in its base has a traditional technique of embroidery — now employed in the new context — documenting ever more complex and layered reality and relations within. We practice this technique in diverse geographic locations and social environments, promoting it as more efficient and veridic (in the terms of representation of reality) then the newest digital photo and video technologies, because, as we say, it requires more time to produce less information (images). Imposed slowness of this technique provides us to spend more time together, with people, discussing and contrasting diverse viewpoints and opinions, that slowly get stitched on the canvas, creating more complex representations of the reality and establishing more coherent relations among us and our surrounding. Doing documentary embroidery we create time and space necessary for reflexion and understanding of the past and ongoing events, while the resulting tapestry becomes the document of that process.
